Meta’s display-toting AI smart glasses could spoil Apple’s party in 2025

Meta has seen some pretty impressive success with its camera-equipped smart glasses, developed in partnership with Ray-Ban. At first, their standout feature was capturing content for social media, but they’ve since grown into a platform for AI-powered functions.

Now, reports suggest Meta is looking into next-gen smart glasses that will include a display. Interestingly, they might launch around the same time as Apple’s usual Fall announcements for new iPhones and other devices. Meanwhile, Apple’s own smart glasses project is said to be trailing behind by a few years.

According to a Bloomberg report, *”Meta Platforms Inc. is prioritizing a major product for 2025: high-end smart glasses priced over $1,000, featuring a small display, with a target launch in October.”* There could be a slight delay, but Meta’s team is reportedly pushing hard to meet the deadline—even if that means working weekends.

The rumored October launch aligns with Meta’s annual Connect event, scheduled for September 17-18 in 2025. Apple typically unveils its new iPhones around the same time, but this year, we might also see a surprise headset reveal.

What’s next for Meta’s smart glasses?

So far, Meta hasn’t ventured into smart glasses with displays, but companies like Viture, TCL, RayNeo, and Xreal have been doing it for years. The big advantage? Instead of relying only on voice or audio commands, users can interact visually with content on a small display embedded behind the lens.

Notably, Meta’s glasses will feature just one display instead of separate screens for each eye. “Unlike Meta’s current models, this version will let wearers use basic on-screen apps and check photos taken with the device,” the Bloomberg report adds.

The display is said to sit in the lower right corner of the lens, meaning only the right eye will see it. Navigation will work via hand gestures on the side arms, with features like map directions, app notifications, and reviewing photos from the built-in cameras.

Under the Hood:

Meta’s upcoming smart glasses are expected to run a heavily modified version of Android, powered by a Qualcomm wearable chip.

Codenamed Hypernova, these next-gen AI glasses could start at 1,000—possiblyreachingupto1,000—possiblyreachingupto1,400. For context, most display-equipped XR glasses today cost around $500.

Beyond this, Meta is also developing Orion—a pair of smart glasses with a holographic display. They’ve already given a detailed preview, but they’re still years away. On the research front, Meta continues to refine true AR glasses under its Aria platform, aimed at scientific and industrial uses.
